In 3rd Primary science classes, the students have been learning about animals. They have learnt that animals can be split into two groups – vertebrates and invertebrates – and each group has different physical characteristics. In this experiment the students studied four different invertebrates to discover whether they had a soft body, a thin exoskeleton, a thick exoskeleton or a shell. The pupils worked in groups to decide what protection (if any) the animals had. Working together all students got the answers correct; the cuttlefish had a soft body, the prawn had a thin exoskeleton, the crab had a thick exoskeleton and the clam had a shell. The students enjoyed the experiment very much and it helped them think about the different appearances of invertebrates.
